On a diffusive SIS epidemic model with mass action infection mechanism

Abstract. We study a susceptible-infected-susceptible epidemic model with mass action infection mechanism and spatially heterogeneous disease transmission and recovery rates. A basic reproduction number is defined, and global stability of the disease-free equilibrium and endemic equilibrium is studied. We shall see that the steady state problem of the system can be reduced to a single equation with nonlocal term, thanks to the conservation of total population. We will mainly focus on the asymptotic profiles of steady states when the diffusion rate of the susceptible/infected population is small.
